When Should I Start Getting Botox?

By , On

Many people ask when the “right time” is to start Botox. The answer isn’t based on age alone, but on how the face moves, how expression lines develop over time, and personal preferences around treatment.

Neuromodulator treatments are sometimes discussed for both existing expression lines and early changes that may become more noticeable with movement. Genetics, facial expression, and skin quality can all influence how and when lines develop, which is why timing and treatment approach vary from person to person.

Preventative vs. corrective neuromodulator use

You may hear the term “preventative” used to describe neuromodulator treatments that are discussed earlier in the development of expression lines. This generally refers to addressing muscle movement before lines become more deeply etched into the skin. In these cases, lower doses or fewer treatment areas may be considered, depending on individual needs.

For others, neuromodulators may be discussed as part of a plan to soften the appearance of lines that are already present. Treatment approach, dosing, and timing are always individualized.

Supporting skin health alongside treatment

In addition to in-clinic treatments, skincare is often part of broader skin health discussions. Daily sun protection, antioxidant use, and ingredients that support skin turnover are commonly reviewed when talking about long-term skin care. The most appropriate routine depends on skin type, tolerance, and personal preferences.

The best way to determine whether neuromodulator treatment is appropriate, and if so, when, is through a consultation with a qualified provider. This allows time to review goals, discuss risks and limitations, and determine an individualized approach.
